baby boomer, midlife crisis, old young, young old

over the hillAre you too old to be young, but too young to be old?  You’re likely from the “baby boomer” generation.  Having worked for longer than you have left to work, you’re starting to count down the years to when you don’t have to go into work anymore.  It’s still a long ways off but you find yourself thinking of it more and more.

You’ve probably cut back on some on your frivolous spending too, after looking at your weak investment statements.  You started saving too late, spent too much over the years, and now have too much time to make up for.

To make things worse, the younger people view you as old, and the gray hairs see you as a young whipper snapper.  You’ve already had a mid-life crisis in your forties.  You bought the sports car.  And you tried some partying like in your youth only to find you’re now a wimp.  Your round balding head is protruding ever more, as is your belly.

So what’s left?mid life crisis

Whether you see it or not, you’re actually in your prime.  You’re probably still pretty healthy.  You’re probably making more money than ever in your life.  Your kids are probably grown or mostly so.  You’re in a good spot!

Don’t get caught up in things!  Get caught up in the moments.  Enjoy the simple things each day.  Save away all the money you can and forget about it.  Instead, make life about enjoying things that don’t cost money.  If you had done this when you were younger, you’d be there already.  But it’s not too late.  Go for it.

Is Time On Your Side?

consumerville, dead presidents, get more time, lost time, million dollars, money with plan, party, time for money, time prison

If you had several million dollars and never had to work again, what would you want to do with your time?  Party!  How one would spend their precious time is really at the heart of most people’s wildest dreams when they imagine not having to work.  But since most of us are not wealthy, how we spend our time is tangled up with how we spend our money.  Since most of us blow most all the money we earn, we are not able to spend our time as we please.  That bites.
gold stash - ha!

We trade our time and ultimately much of our lives for money.  That’s the harsh and depressing reality.  Would you drag yourself to work and put up with the office dramas and divas if there weren’t some dead presidents in it for you?  Yet even piles of money won’t add any more days to your life.  The best we can do is to figure out how to squeeze more time out of each day to do the things that we really want to do.

I’m not talking about time management.  No, we should understand the true cause of why we can’t spend our time as we please.  We should hope that it slaps us upside the head.  It should, because the reason we’re time-poor is right in front of our faces.  Just look around your house, your garage, your driveway, your yard.  See all the balls and chains?

If you want more time each day to do the things that matter most to you, then you’re going to have to trade something for it – your spending frenzy and fascination with stuff.  You’ll have to grow some gonads to do this right.  For many of us our stuff, and our desire to buy more of it, is a time prison.  We are slaves in the land of the free.  Yes, the biggest irony in our society.dead presidents

We have to work too much, because we’re spending all we make buying way more than we need.  Then to add insult to injury we’re spending most of our spare time taking care of it all and little time actually enjoying it.  Such is the vicious cycle living in mega consumerville.  Much of our lives, our energy, our opportunities, are ultimately traded for stuff.  And our time is squandered, flushed down the drain, out of reach.

The solution is really pretty radically simple:  Learn to tell your money where not to go and then someday it can tell you not to go to work anymore!  That would be sweet.  Your income (no matter what the level) is your greatest tool for gaining your freedom, for adding time to every day.  So get mad about being robbed of it!  Defend your money like a mother bear seeing a threat to her cubs.  What you do (and don’t do) with your money is far more important than how much you make!

game planMoney with a plan will stick around and give you time to enjoy.  An impressive wad without a plan will mysteriously wander off and suck away all your spare time with it.  And hope.

It’s not always about Money

buy time, find more time, not about money, priorities, time management, workaholic

Don’t misunderstand this: There is nothing fundamentally wrong with making money or having money – lots of it. But there is a hazard associated with money that is worth assessing, in case we fall into a dangerous trap.

When the behavior that kept us broke and in debt is suddenly and radically changed like a wildfire to an intense desire to never be foolish with money again, which is a very sought-after transformation, we run the risk of going too far the other way if we’re not prepared.  Thinking we’re just being frugal, we can suddenly transition from careless to cheapskate, from an open hand to a stingy closed fist.  And we can spend all of our time working and seeking more money.

Cost of Success

business men, business tycoon, celebrity, cost of success, movie star, public icon, rock star, successful people

You will find a common theme in the biographies of highly successful people. Whether they are thriving businessmen, musicians, or actors you will find an unusual degree of focus and dedication to the craft. Perhaps even an obsession. There is no need to get into the psychological reasons for this immense passion, but the obsession likely includes a strong sense of having to prove oneself.

There is something else that these “stars” have in common too. Being the best will require long, late hours continually – study, practice and more practice. Because of the extreme time commitment, many (not all) of these icons are unable to maintain healthy relationships at home. At some point a decision is made, whether conscious or unconscious, to continue pursuing the real love. As a result, marriages and other relationships with family suffer for it.

It is not physically possible to be the best at everything, as there simply is not enough time. Therefore to excel unusually high in one area will cost you in another, plain and simple. If you want to develop your own thriving business it will cost you. If you want to try to become a rock star it will cost you. If you want to make it on the silver screen, it will cost you.

The momentous feats will cost you time, money, sweat and tears, and maybe many relationships along the way. Shoot for the stars, yes. But make sure the target is worth the sacrifice. And while you’re heading there, strive for a balance between your “thing” and the other important things in life.

What will you be remembered for?

box in the shed, fame, family reunion, father, grandfather, great grandfather, little league coach, memories, morning coffee, old man

A Box In The Shed

My great grandfathers had fame for all I know,
Though I met them but once or twice,
A few old pictures are all that remain,
In a box in the shed with the mice

My grandfathers I saw more frequently,
And for me they always took time,
Still I can see their smiling faces,
Etched in this memory of mine

When I was nine or ten one grandfather died,
Then we moved far away,
By the time I saw the other one again,
He could not remember my name

My father the hard worker and little league coach,
Always early to rise, coffee, newspaper,
Who can forget the morning singing,
And how wherever he went, a friend maker?

My father still there when I was grown,
Always stopped by to make sure all is well,
No matter the next town or two states away,
Through ten feet of snow is the story I’ll tell

My life somehow now more busy than ever,
And my visits home ever more tardy,
My father pushing ninety and quietly sitting,
No longer the life of the party

I dread the day when my father is gone,
The last of the generation before,
He will be remembered the rest of my life,
And his memory the grandkids will adore

Soon I’ll be the old man at the family reunions,
My great grandkids to meet once or twice,
And after a few short years, all that I have done,
In box in the shed with the mice

Buy Yourself Some Time

buy time, downsize, time, time is money, trade time, work less

We trade our time and ultimately our lives for money. That’s the harsh and depressing reality. Would you drag yourself to work and put up with the office dramas and divas if there wasn’t some pocket change in it for you? Yet piles of money won’t buy or add anymore days to your life. So if you want more time for yourself, then you’re going to have to trade something for it.

That means either working less hours (if you’re out of debt and think you can afford to work less) or getting rid of some serious stuff. We are not against having things. We are against stuff that requires working a ridiculous number of hours to pay the bill, especially when the bloody item will also soak up your “free” time to maintain it. The amount of free time that you have is directly related to how much stuff you have to take care of. So sell, downsize, trade, and get rid of anything that sucks up your time like a black hole. Less stuff means less work needed to pay for it and less time needed to take care of it. You’ll actually be getting more time and saving money. It’s a win-win solution.
